Where did "Black IPA" come from anyway?

So I'm hearing that the term black IPA has become controversial.  Why?  I don't know.  Not much controversy in my eyes.  A misnomer?  Yes.  A controversy?  No.

I'm not sure what I was expecting. The label says right on it: bacon and maple. It delivers. Both on the nose but all bacon down the hatch. Maybe I don't love bacon as much as I thought.
